About Word Counter

Word Counter is a free tool for counting words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines in any piece of text. Type directly into the box or switch to file mode and upload a .txt file — the counts update instantly either way, and you can download a plain-text report of the results together with the original text. Whether you're checking an essay against a word limit, trimming a social media post to fit a character cap, or just curious how long a document is, everything runs locally in your browser: your text is never uploaded to a server.

FAQ

Does this tool upload my text anywhere?
No. Whether you type it in or upload a .txt file, your text is read and counted entirely in your browser and never sent to a server.
How is the word count calculated?
Words are counted as runs of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks — so extra spaces between words never inflate the count.
What does "Count Spaces" do?
When it's on, the character count includes spaces, tabs and line breaks. Turn it off to count only non-whitespace characters.
What file types can I upload?
Plain text files (.txt). The file's contents are read locally in your browser and never uploaded anywhere.
How are paragraphs and lines counted?
Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by at least one blank line. Lines count actual line breaks in the text, the same way a plain text file's line count works — not how the text visually wraps on screen.
What's in the downloaded results file?
A plain text file listing the character, word, sentence, paragraph and line counts, followed by the original text you entered or uploaded.
